Truth. Told strong.
Troy Richard Carr, founder of Steel Man Resumes.
The logo is a normal distribution -- a bell curve. The man is me, pushing the curve to the right: the worst-performing part of any population moved toward better, and the whole curve with it.
Left tail: the worst of a population on any metric. Middle: most people. Right: the exceptional. My mission has always been to move the whole curve right -- one person at a time, and whole populations at once.
It is often mistaken for Sisyphus. It is not Sisyphus. It is statistics.

TROY FORWARDThe Forge heats. The Refinery shapes. The steel holds. Every page of this site carries that line forward.

The man behind the mission
Technology second.
I am formerly incarcerated and formerly homeless, and recovery is part of my story. I began this work as a halfway-house alum, then spent a decade helping justice-impacted people through sober living homes, treatment centers, jails, and prisons across Wisconsin. Steel Man Resumes grew from that practice and from knowing what it means to need a truthful story and useful tools.
My work now runs on two connected tracks. More than 15 years in manufacturing and operations taught me process discipline, continuous improvement, and how systems fail under real pressure. A self-taught technical practice turned that experience into career platforms, case-management systems, community resource hubs, research tools, and client infrastructure. The Forge and The Refinery are the clearest public expression of that work.
I also founded The Midnight Garden, where I build digital visibility and operating systems for entrepreneurs and mission-driven organizations. That work has grown into a wider network of collaborators, sponsors, underwriters, clients, and national learning communities.
Trained to ASQ Six Sigma Black Belt standard, applied across 15+ years of manufacturing and operations leadership. FICGN Narrative Change Fellow. P2P Scholar, Cohort 49. Published researcher. Reentry United 2026 breakout presenter. The titles matter less than what they make possible: better tools, stronger partnerships, and work that can stand up to scrutiny.

More than resumes
01CAREER AND WORKFORCE SYSTEMS
Built The Forge, The Refinery, and The Mini Forge as one connected career system. The work combines practical coaching, narrative reconstruction, research, and production software for people navigating barriers to employment.
02CASE MANAGEMENT AND COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE
Builds case-management systems, community resource hubs, referral pathways, and other digital infrastructure for organizations doing direct service. The goal is usable operations, not technology for its own sake.
03DIGITAL VISIBILITY AND CLIENT SYSTEMS
Through The Midnight Garden, builds websites, research-backed visibility strategies, intake systems, and technical foundations for entrepreneurs and mission-driven organizations.
04RESEARCH AND RESPONSIBLE AI
Published a 10,800-query study with DOIs on Open Science Framework. The Forge methodology draws from 150+ peer-reviewed citations. Responsible-AI work includes auditable platform design and advisory work for Justice Beacon Solutions.
05DIRECT SERVICE AND LIVED EXPERIENCE
Incarceration, homelessness, recovery, and a decade of direct service are not branding devices. They are the operating context behind the work and the reason every system has to make sense on a hard day.
The Steel Man philosophy
Why "Steel Man"?
You've heard of a "straw man" argument -- a weak version of something that's easy to knock down. A "steel man" is the opposite: the strongest possible version of an argument.
That's what we do with your resume. We don't make a flimsy version of you that crumbles under scrutiny. We build the strongest possible case for why you should be hired.
We Don't Pretend Your Past Doesn't Exist
If you have a gap, a record, or a rocky work history -- employers are going to find out anyway. We help you get ahead of it. Address it on your terms. Turn a red flag into a story of growth.
Real Talk, Real Results
We won't tell you that you can be anything you want to be. We'll tell you what's realistic for your situation -- and then help you get there. The first job isn't always the dream job. But it's the job that gets you moving forward.
