What you're looking at

Who hires

Employers we can show hire people with records. Every one has proof and a date.

how we know +

An employer gets the mark “Hires people with records” only when we can point to something real: its own policy or program, a confirmed hire, or the owner telling us.

Marks run out. If nobody checks again, the mark comes off. A list from three years ago tells you nothing about who hires today.

A tier says how we know: Tier 1 is a public record, Tier 2 means a person there confirmed it with us, Tier 3 means we work with them to get people hired.

Who helps

Job centers, reentry programs, legal aid, ID, housing, food and rides near you.

how we know +

Each place carries a label. Checked by Steel Man means we opened the page and it held up. Listed means a dated public source lists it and we have not finished checking. Found, call first came from a government list or an old check.

We show the checked ones first, and we say out loud which ones we have not checked yet. Better a lead with an honest label than a short list.

The law

What an employer can ask about your record in your state, and when you can clear it.

how we know +

Every law line links to the statute or the agency that says it, with the date we read it. We re-check each state on a schedule.

It is coaching, not legal advice. For your own case, the legal aid groups on your state page can help for free.

Running out soon

These come off in the next 60 days unless someone checks again.

Job hunting with a record, in four steps

  1. 01

    Build the resume

Lead with what you can do. Your record does not go on your resume. How to write it.

  2. 02

    Know your state law

What they can ask and when changes by state. Pick your state above, or read ban the box laws.

  3. 03

    Plan what you will say

Short, true, and pointed at what you have done since. Plan it here.

  4. 04

    Aim, then apply

Start with employers that have proof, then widen out. The strategy.

Questions people ask

What companies hire felons near me?+

Pick your state on the map. Each state page lists the employers we found that hire people with records, with the proof and the date we checked it, plus free local help like your job center and reentry programs.

What jobs can felons get?+

More than most people think: warehouse and manufacturing, construction and the trades, food service, trucking, landscaping, and plenty of office and customer service work. Some jobs are closed by law for certain convictions, like some health care, school, banking and security jobs. The employer matters more than the industry.

Which states are the most felon friendly for jobs?+

There's no official list. What really changes from state to state is when an employer can ask about your record, whether you can seal or expunge it, and which licenses have rules about it. Your state page has all three, with the law linked.

Do I have to tell an employer about my felony?+

Never lie on an application. A lie found later can cost you the job. When they can ask depends on your state and the job. Plan what you will say before you apply. Coaching, not legal advice.

How far back do background checks go?+

Under federal law a background check company can report a conviction no matter how old it is. Arrests that did not lead to a conviction generally drop off after seven years, except for jobs paying $75,000 or more. Some states add their own limits; check your state page.

What does "Hires people with records" mean?+

We only mark an employer when there is dated evidence: the employer's own policy or program, a confirmed hire, or the owner telling us. Every mark shows its source and runs out unless we check it again. It means they have said it or shown it. It does not promise you a job.

Is Steel Man Resumes free?+

Yes. The Forge builds your resume, cover letter and career report from your story with a free account. The Refinery helps you aim it at a job, plan the record conversation and practice interviews.
